Most of the gardens and parks in Spanish cities serve as vital lung-spaces and green areas in the midst of the busy urban sprawl. They're also places where the locals come out to relax and enjoy the fresh air and stroll through the verdant surroundings. Many parks have historical monuments, artworks, outdoor venues for various cultural events.

Some of the famous Spanish gardens are:

Sabatini Gardens, Madrid: Located outside the Oriente Palace, which is part of the Royal Palace in Madrid, these gardens are in the Neoclassical style and are constructed round a lovely marble fountain, and pools, with statues and ancient trees laid out in neat rows. The water-bodies provide serene views of the palace and are ideal for a quiet evening or morning walk.

Viera y Clavijo, Gran Canaria: This relatively new botanical garden was established in the early 1950s and is famous for its diverse and rich plant collection from across the globe. The garden is laid out in distinct sections like the Garden of Islands, Garden of Cactii, Ornamental Gardens, Hidden Garden, Herbarium and Laurel Forest. It is indeed a botanist's delight.

Parque del Clot, Barcelona: This charming four-hectare park built on several levels in the heart of busy Barcelona is an architectural wonder, with man-made water-bodies and waterfalls, and beautifully laid-out flowering shrubs and trees.

Royal Monastery Gardens, Guadalupe: Part of the Royal Monastery complex in Guadalupe, Caeceres, in the Extremadura region, these gardens are meticulously landscaped and filled with orange and cypress groves. It offers a glimpse of the melding of Islamic and Christian traditions.

Dona Casilda Park, Bilbao: This very romantic and serene park is famous for its gorgeous avenues of mature trees, the spectacular fountain, the heritage merry-go-round, beautiful lake and jetty with rowing boats. The Fine Arts Museum and concert venue located here offer cultural events from time to time.

Valencia University Botanical Gardens, Valencia: This pretty 19th century park is laid out in the classical textbook arrangement of Linnaeus' gradation of plants. The lovely greenhouses, unusual shade garden and enclosure of aquatic plants are notable. The garden also has an interesting aquarium, aviary, rock-gardens and groups of rare trees and plants.

Son Marroig, Deia: This historical country estate that once belonged to the royals of Austria has attractive gardens, pavilions, pagodas, viewing towers and balconies which look out onto the cliffs and the sea beyond. There is a good restaurant here with a stunning sea-views and the estate is also open to the public, with guided tours round the mansions here.
